Sports Vision

Many people have never heard the term sports vision. Typically, this expression is used in connection with the demands varying sports put on visual skills. All athletes recognize the important of getting peak performance from their body, but often overlook the need to get peak performance from their eyes. Sports vision typically focuses on three central visual skills.

1) Dynamic Visual Acuity

This term refers to maintain crisp, clear vision when you're in motion, just like when you are motionless. Crisp dynamic visual acuity ensures that you see every obstacle in your path.

2) Contrast Sensitivity

This visual skill ensures that you are able to see the finest details possible when looking into the distance.

3) Focus Flexibility

Focus Flexibility ensures that you can keep moving objects in focus, whether they are coming toward you or moving away from you.

Different sports present unique challenges and demands. For example, peak focus flexibility is very important to the tennis or hockey player, whereas contrast sensitivity is critical for the golfer. However, all sports have one thing in common. They all demand crisp peripheral vision, depth perception and eye-hand coordination.

Contact Lenses and Sports Vision

Contact lenses are ideally suited to athletes of all types and ages. In the past, some athletes were forced to take unwanted risks by wearing eyeglasses during sports. Those days are gone. Contact lenses offer the athlete outstanding vision correction without the risks of broken frames or lenses. In addition, they do not fog up, slide down the nose, or fall off. Protective eyewear can be worn at the same time, including sunglasses or goggles. Athletes seem to prefer disposable contact lenses over other types, largely due to comfort and convenience.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, contact lenses can be tinted to aid in color enhancement. Tinted lenses are different than colored contacts, which simply change or enhance eye color. Tinted lenses help to filter out other colors. Examples include yellow tinted soft contacts or tinted rigid gas permeable lenses. Examples of useful tinted contacts for athletes are those offering yellow enhancement, which are ideal for tennis players playing with traditional yellow tennis balls.
